I sure do. Although I talk to friends about my life, generally, I'm not seeking their advice. I'm not looking to be told what to do. I'm looking for help deciding and determining the best course of action for myself. I love my friends, but they are not trained listeners. They freely and sometimes vehemently insist that I take a course of action that is not congruent with my goals and values. They are telling me what they'd do the situation or what they'd like to think they would do in my situation. That's why advice doesn't work. It is not about helping me see my way; it's often about the giver of the advice wanting to reduce their anxiety at hearing my upset by offering well intended solutions that just don't fit.
I'm a big fan of journaling. Sometimes I don't know what I think or feel about something until I write about it. In my journal I'm free to express anything and everything without censoring myself. In it, I write letters to people I'm upset with as a way to work through my hurt, fear of anger and find out what I'm really wanting about the situation.
